Taylor Lake

Friday, September 17, 2010

Today we went to Taylor Lake. It is about 10 miles north of where we are staying. The road to get there is about 23 miles long. It is a dirt road that weaves in and out of beautifully tall evergreens.

Once we hit the actual lake we were no longer looking at forest, but breathtaking mountains. There is a little area on the edge of the lake. It is privately owned and has 20-25 cabins for rent.  It  also offers  a general store and gift shop.(Of course). There is one more building that is  country style cooking restaurant. They have it set up so once you are there with your buddies, you do not have to leave and go into town for anything.  It is completely set up for a boys weekend playground.

There are so many trails for ATV's. And so much fishing to be done.  It is quite nice, but definitely not the place if you are a girlie girl!

From there we continued up the mountain back to Tin Cup. I love this little town. We were there several weeks ago and entered it from the opposite side of the mountain. It only has 23 houses/log cabins. It is completely boarded up for the winter and we did not see one person. We were told that the winters are very unforgiving here and why anyone would choose to toughen it out is beyond my capacity of  comprehension. I don't even like 40 degrees, never mind minus 40!

Tommy wanted to go into downtown Gunnison today and talk to some sportmans store guys about getting a fishing licence. We want to learn how to fly fish. Everyone does it here and it looks so cool. We found out the licence is $54 and the poles can run anywhere from $129.00 to $2600.00. Then you need the rubber boot/pant/overall - all in one outfit. You also need some kind of bright pink fish bait and a tons of flies.

Taking a guided tour was starting to sound alot better. But we still cant find anyone to take us under $300 for the both of us. Tommy and I talked about it, and we would actually pay that if we could keep the fish for dinner. But you cant! We havent given up on learning it but for now, its on the back burner.

Tonight we went to an Observatory. Every Friday night they have viewings for a small donation. It is a non-profit organization and you can give as much or as little as you want. We each gave $10.  When you get to the Observatory you park in a dirt field and follow this dirt road/path that is lit only by very low lighted solar lanterns. The road twists and turns and you end up walking in between huge berms. Once you arrive at the place you see this huge dome. Very Very Cool!  Inside they have a class room and and upstairs. Upstairs inside the dome is a tremendous lens. It is the size of my VW Bug. The dome opens and depending on where they tell the computer to point it. You can see stars, planets, galaxies, or shooting stars, its amazing. We saw several things that they named for us but I couldn't remember them if you paid me. But one thing I think I will never forget is - We saw Jupiter. We saw  all 4 of the moons and the ring going around the center of the Planet. It was incredible!!!

September 21st Jupiter will be bigger and brighter than it has been in 50 years. You can see it in the SE sky with a naked eye.  It is very, very bright.  Look for it!

Tomorrow we will leave Gunnison and head to.......I really don't know to be honest! heheheheh. All I know is we are going toward Telluride, Mesa Verde, Durango, Flagstaff and Albuquerque before heading home. Tommy's the navigator and that's fine by me.

Thanks for reading and have a good weekend!
