Crested Butte, CO

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Before I blog I want to say that  I hope everyone involved in the tornado in NY today is okay. My cousin, Helen, who was just out here, text me and said all kinds of mayhem had broke loose. She lives in Queens. Forrest Hills, to be exact. There were trees down everywhere and several windows in her building blew through. She also stated that she was amazed that her door man is alive. The entire area where he works is gone!

Okay, happy story time -
We woke up late today an headed into Crested Butte. We are staying at a camp ground called the Tall Texan, in Gunnison. Gunnison is a great, great town. We arrived yesterday, late, and had dinner in town.

Today in Crested Butte we walked the main street and entered into alot of shops. the main street there is called Elk Street. All the buildings, which were mostly houses way back when, are historically marked and protected from remodeling There were 13 Real Estate Offices on Main Street. Alot of stuff for sale. The housing is expensive but the houses are gorgeous! We found one we like alot. We drove up to the ski area and only found one ski lift. That is odd, I think, because from what we have been told this is a pretty popular area in the winter.

We were also told that it is not uncommon to get as cold as -65 degrees in the winter....that's MINUS 65 degrees....

We made an executive decision and decided that if we should decide to buy a house here, it will only be occupied by us during the summer! Forget that cold weather, that is why I moved from NY to FLA.

On the way back home we were told of a pass over Kebbler Mountain so we took it. All the Aspen trees are turning and it was spectacular. It took almost 2 hrs to get through the pass but it was worth it.

We stopped in downtown Gunnison and had really good Mexican food for dinner. They make their margaritas like they do in Mexico. There is no mix in it all. Only tequila, triple sec, lime juice and whatever else they use. You only need one...hic!

Tomorrow we are extending our stay here. The park is beautiful and we were told that the salmon are running through the Gunnison river, in which we are parked right next to. Tommy found a fly fisherman's kit this morning in the water, while walking the dog and it had a phone # on it so we called and returned it to the owner. It turns out he is a fisherman's guide. We plan to hook up with him and learn how to fly fish. Very excited, have never done that before. The only thing is - he said its $200 and its catch and release! That sucks!

Tomorrow we are planning on going to Taylor Reservoir.

Okay, that's about it for today, thanks for reading and again, I hope everyone is safe!
